曹爸者，乖猴同窗旧友也，于教育学颇有建树，育有一子，今岁入小学。曹爸爱子心切，苦于良书难觅，遂亲译西文，与儿共读。

聪明的傻瓜

很久以前，在印度的一个村子里，有一位叫做达亚尔的人，他头脑简单，村里的人总是嘲笑他，想方设法地捉弄他。

有一天，一位村民找到了达亚尔，向他摊开两只手，一只手里有10个派萨硬币，另一只手里有1张1卢比的纸币。在印度的钱币中，1卢比等于100个派萨。那个村民就问达亚尔，想要哪个手里的钱，达亚尔要了10个派萨。

这个笑话立刻传开了，全村的人听了都哈哈大笑，而且都想亲自去测试一下。

他们一次又一次地去戏弄达亚尔，“你要10个还是1张？”而达亚尔一直要10个派萨硬币。村民就会哈哈大笑，而达亚尔也跟着哈哈大笑。尽管被人嘲笑，达亚尔还总是和大家一起哈哈大笑。

也许达亚尔认为金属的硬币比纸币更值钱，也许他是被数字愚弄了，认为10个的东西肯定比1个值钱。村子里没人知道达亚尔究竟为什么选择10个派萨，也没有人去问达亚尔这件事。

过了好多年，达亚尔生了很严重的病，很可能马上要去世了。村里的一位医生去看望他，发现达亚尔正在哭泣。医生被达亚尔的眼泪打动了，因为达亚尔一直都是一位爱笑的人。

“你为什么哭成这样？”医生问道，达亚尔说，“我对自己这些年来所做的事感到后悔不已。”

达亚尔说，“村里的人对我那么好，但我欺骗了他们。我当然知道1张卢比比10个派萨值钱。傻瓜都知道。但是当第一次那个村民让我选择的时候，我不想占他的便宜，所以我选了10个派萨。随后，我总是选10个派萨，因为我知道一旦我选了1个卢比之后，人们就不会再找我选了。这样一来，我每次总是能得到10个派萨，我也因此赚了很多的卢比。”

原来村子里的这位傻瓜竟然是村子里最聪明的人。

达亚尔曾经被人嘲笑，因为大家都觉得他是一个傻瓜，但他其实一点儿也不傻。如果你身边有同学被人嘲笑傻，你会怎么做呢？

生活中，总有一些人看起来不那么聪明，班上也往往有那么一两位小朋友特别容易被人嘲笑。但其实正如故事中的达亚尔一样，他们未必真如他们表现的那么傻。

每个人都有自己的观点和想法，每个人也都会有优点和缺点。我们可以多发现别人的优点，善待身边每一位朋友。

The Wise Fool

Dayal was the name of the simpleton in a village in India. Everyone always laughed at Dayal, and found ways to play jokes on him. 

One day a villager held out ten paise in one hand and one banknote, a rupee, in the other, and asked Dayal which hand he wanted. Now it takes a hundred paise to make up one rupee, but Dayal picked the ten paise. 

When word of this joke spread, all the villagers laughed and wanted to test it for themselves. Over and over they teased Dayal. “Do you want the ten or the one?” And invariably he took the ten paise coins. They would laugh, and then Dayal would laugh too, for he always joined in laughter, even when it was at his own expense. 

Perhaps Dayal believed that metal was more valuable than paper, or perhaps he was fooled by the numbers, thinking ten had to be greater than one. No one in the village knew, and no one bothered to ask him. 

The day came when Dayal fell very sick and was thought to be dying. The village healer went to visit him, and found him weeping. The healer was moved by his tears, for Dayal had always been a man of laughter.

 “Why do you weep?” the healer asked. “I feel great regret for what I have done all these years,” said Dayal.

 “I have cheated and deceived people who have been kind to me! Of course I know that one rupee is worth more than ten paise. Any fool knows that! But that first time, I chose the paise because I didn’t want to take advantage of the man’s generosity. And after that, I always chose the paise because I knew that if I were to choose the rupee, people would stop offering me the choice at all. Thus by always choosing the ten paise, I earned a great many rupees!” 

And so the village fool was really the wisest man in the village. 

英语词汇简析

这篇故事讲了一个大家都认为是傻瓜的聪明人。傻瓜fool在这篇故事的标题中是名词，但在文中同时可以作动词，即表达一个动作，意思是愚弄别人，比如说“他愚弄了我”（He fooled me）。

当然，如果愿意学习高级一点的词，其实原文中的simpleton也就是傻瓜fool的同义词。傻瓜对应的是聪明wise, 聪明人可以说是 a wise man。大家还记得上一篇故事中老妇人夸奖流浪汉是一位聪明人用的什么词吗？对了，a clever man！

请记住这四个词：fool、simpleton、wise、clever！
