An exciting 1000-mile race across Alaska by dog sled

On the first Saturday of March, mushers and their teams gather at the starting line in Anchorage, Alaska. Excitement is in the air as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins. Spectators cheer on the teams along their 11-mile route through the city. They will travel from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, through dense forests, and across frozen rivers in temperatures far below zero. They will battle nature and the elements to see who will be first to arrive in Nome.

The Iditarod Trail started as a supply route. It ran from the Alaskan coast to the mining camps in the Alaskan interior. In the late 19th and early 20th century, sled dog teams carried mail and supplies into the camps. In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic threatened Nome. The city needed serum to stop the disease, and the closest supply was in Anchorage. Sled dog teams worked together and followed the trail to get the serum to Nome fast. They did it in five and a half days, and the dogs and mushers became heroes.

The first true Iditarod race was held in 1973 to test dog mushers and their teams. It attracted 34 mushers and their dogs. Since then, the race has grown into today's highly competitive race. The mushers belong to all walks of life. Men and women; young and old; doctors, lawyers, artists and more, train teams of dogs to compete. They spend a whole year getting ready and raising money needed to run the race. Race costs run around $10,000. But to keep a kennel of racing dogs running year-round costs $70,000 to$100,000!

Each musher must abide by the rules of the race. During the race, they must make one 24-hour stop and two 8-hour stops. On their sled, they must carry a heavy coat and sleeping bag, an ax, snowshoes, musher food and dog food. They must also have booties for each dog to protect their feet from sharp ice and hard-packed snow. For the participants in the Last Great Race, there's no other experience like it !
