  The Bear's 'Junk'

  Written by Mengxing Lan

When the rabbit went to find the bear, she found that his house was in a complete mess.

“Bear, you should do a spring-clean,” The rabbit said.

“I’m with you. My house is cluttered, and I often can't find what I’m looking for, but you know that I’m not very good at keeping things tidy”, the bear replied.

“It doesn't matter, I will help you tidy up!” The rabbit said.

“Bear, you have a lot of junk!” the rabbit said, after glancing around the bear’s room.

“I have a lot of junk? I have no idea what you mean. Everything in here is like a treasure to me,” The bear argued.

The rabbit discovered a box covered in dust under the bear’s bed. She opened the box to have a look inside, and it was filled with dry leaves.

“These leaves are junk, aren’t they? I will throw them away for you, bear!” said the rabbit.

“You mustn’t throw them away!” The bear took the box of leaves back off the rabbit and said, “These are not junk! These are the leaves we collected the first time we went on the Autumn outing together. Every winter, I take them out to have a look at them. Recalling that day when the mountain was covered in red leaves gives me a special warm feeling in Winter.”

“In that case, can you lend them to me then?”The rabbit asked.

“Of course I can! You’re my best friend!” said the bear.

The rabbit discovered a pile of large and small pebbles on the bear’s window sill.

“Bear, these pebbles are junk. Can they be thrown away? They are taking up too much space.”

“Certainly not!” The bear ran over and put his arms around the pebbles to protect them. “These pebbles are not junk. These are the pebbles we collected the first time we went to the river bank to go fishing. Every Summer, they remind me to call you to go to the river bank again. Happy times need to be recaptured every year.”

“OK, can you lend them to me instead?” The rabbit asked.

“Of course I can lend them to you! You aremy best friend,” said the bear.

After a while, the rabbit found an oily and muddy table cloth on top of the bear's bookshelf. It had several large holes in it.

“Bear, this tablecloth is unusable, can it be thrown away now that it is junk?” The rabbit asked in a loud voice.

“You mustn’t throw it out!" The bear marchedover and grabbed the tablecloth, then hid it behind his back.” This tablecloth is not a piece of junk. This is the tablecloth we used the first time we had a picnic."

“But it has so much oil and mud on it, why don't you wash it and put it away?” The rabbit was baffled.

“You mustn't wash it. It’s no ordinary mud!” The bear answered seriously. “Have you forgotten? I accidentally fell into apuddle on the way back that day. You used this tablecloth to help me wipe the mud off me. Seeing it reminds me of you, and what a good friend you are. It makes me feel happy and blessed.”

“I understand. Can you lend me this too?” The rabbit asked.

“No problem at all!” The bear agreed again.

After finishing the spring-clean, the rabbit took the items home.

In the evening, the bear felt very tired and went to bed early.

When she returned home, the rabbit took out the three things that the bear had lent her.

Using the dried leaves, she made a collage of a bear and a rabbit collecting the leaves in the woods; with the tablecloth, she painted over the stains and muddy footprints with bright colours to make an abstract painting; and as for the pebbles, she picked a few colours and painted the pebbles to make eggs.

That evening, the rabbit made use of the time when the bear was asleep. She hung the leaf collage and the abstract painting on the wall in his house; she placed the painted eggs made of pebbleson his window sill and bookshelf; and she arranged the left over pebbles around a small flowerbed in the bear’s garden, scattering some flower seeds on it.

The rabbit hoped from the bottom of her heart that when the bear woke up, he would love her surprise.
