Humans and all mammals alike need air to breathe. Air provides us with oxygen, which is essential for our bodies to live. Air is 99.9% nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor and inert gases. Humans are constantly on the go and during our constant activities we release substances into the air. Some of these substances can cause serious problems to humans, plants, animals and the entire environment as a whole.

One of the effects of pollution is smog. This problem can and does have serious effects on our health and well-being. Smog is a relatively common form of pollution especially in large industrialized areas. A large amount of smog is caused by emissions from cars and factories. Governments around the world are trying to eliminate this problem by establishing laws to make cars and factories more environmentally friendly.

人类和所有哺乳类动物一样都需要呼吸空气。空气提供我们氧气，这是我们生存所不可或缺的。空气中含有99.9%的氮、氧、水蒸气和非活性气体。人类忙个不停，就在我们一直活动的过程中，我们会释放出一些物质到空气中。这些物质当中有一些会对人体、动植物和环境整体造成伤害。

雾霾就是污染所带来的其中一个影响。这个问题极可能会也的确会对我们的身心健康产生严重的影响。。雾霾是一种相当常见的污染类型，尤其是在占地广大的工业区。汽车和工厂排放的废气产生大量的雾霾。全球各国政府正设法借由立法促使汽车和工厂能更环保，以便解决这个问题。

语法重点：

1. 复习A and B alike（A 及 B）的结构：

a. 上列结构中，alike 是副词，等于equally（相同地），故：

A and B alikeA 和 B

= both A and B

= A as well as B

The new rule applies to  men and women alike（both men and women，men as well as women） .

这项新规定男女皆适用。

b. 本课第一段第一句即使用了A andB alike的结构：

Humans and all mammals alike（Both humans and all mammals，Humans as well as all mammals） need air to breathe.

人类和所有哺乳类动物一样都需要呼吸空气。

2. 肯定句中偶而会使用助动词 do、does 或 did 强调或凸显该动词所表达的意思，此时do、does或did之后的动词恒为原形，且do、does或did多译成“的确”。

a. 未强调前：

Peterlivesin that small village.

彼得就住在那个小村落。

Davidsmokeda lot when he was young.

戴维年轻的时候烟瘾很大。

Weneedanother $10,000 for the project.

这项计划要推行我们额外需要一万美元。

b. 使用 do、does 或 did 强调上述句子：

Peterdoes livein that small village.

彼得的确就住在那个小村落。

Daviddid smokea lot when he was young.

戴维年轻的时候的确烟瘾很大。

Wedo needanother $10,000 for the project.

我们的确额外需要 1 万美元来推行这个项目。

c. 本课第二段第二句即使用了助动词“does + V”的结构：

This problem can (have) anddoes haveserious effects on our health and well-being.

这个问题极可能会也的确会对我们的身心健康产生严重的影响。

d. 以上助动词不可与 be 动词并用，即无“do / does / did + be”的用法：

Paulwasa musician before working as an editor in our company. (√)

保罗在本公司担任编辑前曾是个乐手。

但不可说：

Pauldid bea musician before working as an editor in our company. (×)

此时可用副词indeed（的确）

Paulwas indeeda musician before working as an editor in our company.                 (√)

保罗在本公司担任编辑前的确是个乐手。

注意：  以原形动词起首的命令句均可使用 do 强调（包含 be 动词在内），此时 do 译成“务必”。

要用功读书。

Do studyhard.

=Be sure tostudy hard.

务必要用功读书。

Bequiet; the baby is sleeping.

安静,小宝宝正在睡觉。

Do bequiet, the baby is sleeping.

=Be sure to bequiet; the baby is sleeping.

务必要安静；小宝宝正在睡觉。
