Any number of emergencies can happen every day. In many cases, Red Cross rescue teams must be called. Red Cross rescue teams must learn how to save people in any and all environments. Emergencies are not just confined to cities. They can occur over water, in the mountains, or underground. They can also involve industrial chemicals, vehicles, and foul weather. This is why Red Cross rescue teams must train so hard. So what kind of training do they receive?

Red Cross rescue teams learn the most up-to-date rope techniques around. They use special ropes, equipment and skills to access and transport people to safety. There are some knot-tying techniques especially suited for climbing walls, others for lifting people, and still others for securing a man against fast-moving water. Rescue workers must also be well versed in the use of heavy rescue tools for industrial accidents. They may need to flyin on helicopters, so training should include flight time as well. Above all, rescuers must have basic life-support skills so they can keep their casualties alive until ambulance paramedics arrive. In an ideal world, there would be a hospital around every corner, but in reality this is impossible. Therefore, there will always be a need for trained rescue workers such as those of the Red Cross.

每天或多或少都會有緊急情況發生。在許多情況下，紅十字會救難小組就會接到召集。紅十字會救難小組必須習得如何在各種狀況下救人。緊急狀況並不一定只限於城市中。它們會發生在水上、山區裏或地底下。它們也包括工業用化學制品、車輛以及惡劣的天氣。這也是爲什麼紅十字會救難小組必須接受嚴格訓練的原因。那麼他們接受的是什麼樣的訓練呢？

紅十字會救難小組學的是最新的爬繩技巧。他們用特殊的繩索、裝備及技能接近傷員並將他們送到安全的地方。救難小組也學一些結繩技巧，有些適用於攀牆，有些則用來把人升起來，還有其他適用於將人牢牢捆住，以免被急流沖走。救難小組的成員也必須精通重裝備救難工具，以應對工業事故救援。他們可能也需要乘直升機飛行，所以訓練也應該要包括飛行時數。最重要的是，救難組員必須要有基本的維生技巧，如此可使傷員的生命維續到救護車醫護人員抵達救難現場。理想的世界中，最好是每一個角落都有一間醫院，但實際上這是不可能的。因此，我們始終需要像紅十字會救難小組這樣受過訓練的救難人員。

語法重點：

1.複習 number 與 amount 表“量”的用法：

a. a large/considerable number of+複數名詞（如people,flowers,accidents,books,tables等）

大量的∕許多的……

a small number of + 複數名詞些許的∕少許的……

The concert drew a large number of fans.

= The concert drew a large audience.

演唱會吸引了一大羣粉絲∕觀衆。

＊以上第二個例句中，audience表“觀衆”或“聽衆”，是集合名詞，只能與a / an並用，an audience表“一羣觀衆∕聽衆”；a largeaudience表“一大羣觀衆∕聽衆”；“an audience of +數字”表“若幹觀衆∕聽衆”，如an audience of 50,000（五萬名觀衆∕聽衆），但若表示“好幾場的觀衆”則可使用audiences。

In my view, the show was quite good, but somehow only a smallnumber offans / students / people came to watch it.

依我之見，這場秀相當棒，但不知怎的，只有少數粉絲∕學生∕人前來觀賞。

b. 句首有“the number of + 複數名詞”表“……的數量”，由於是 thenumber作主語，故之後應採用第三人稱單數動詞或完成時助動詞has。

Because of the economic recession, the number of tourists in this area hasdrastically dropped.

由於經濟不景氣，這個地方的遊客已急劇減少。

c. a large/considerable amount of+不可數名詞（如information,ice,water,evidence,damage,pollution等）大量的……

a small amount of + 不可數名詞少量的……

The typhoon caused a considerable amount of damage in that village.

這場颱風對那個村莊造成大量的損壞。

I believe we need only a small amount of money and manpower to carryout the plan.

我相信我們只需要少量的金錢及人力就可執行該計劃。

d. 句首有“the amount of + 不可數名詞”表示“……的量”，由於是 theamount作主語，故之後應採第三人稱單數或完成時助動詞has。

The amount(主語) of money you have given us is(動詞) far more than enough.

你給我們的錢款數量多得讓我們用不完。

2. 本課首句使用了 number，故之後與複數名詞並用，即：

Any number of emergencies can happen every day in many cities.

每天或多或少都會有緊急狀況發生。

3. 複習下列不限定代詞的用法：

兩羣：some...others... 一些……另一些……

三羣：some...others... still others... 一些……一些……另一些……

Hobbies vary with people. Some enjoy collecting stamps, where as others lovecollecting match boxes.

愛好因人而異。有些人喜歡集郵，有些人則喜歡蒐集火柴盒。

Different people have different pastimes. Some enjoy painting, others are fondof music, whilestill othersare crazy about rock climbing.

不同的人有不同的消遣。有些人喜歡畫畫，有些人喜歡音樂，有些人則特別喜歡攀巖。

4. 本課第二段第三句即使用了“some... others... still others...”的用法：

There are some knot-tying techniques (which are) especially suited for climbingwalls,others(= other knot-tying techniques) for lifting people,and still others(and still other knot-tying techniques) for securing a man against fast-movingwater.

救難小組也學一些結繩技巧，有些適用於攀牆，有些則用來把人升起來，有些適用於將人牢牢捆住，以免被急流沖走。
