  The Little Eggshell Finds Happiness

  Written by Li Yan

‘Peck, peck, peck.’ The pink eggshell broke, and a pale yellow beak emerged out of a small hole. The pecking continued for a bit, and then a chubby little yellow chick jumped out of the eggshell. The little yellow chick shook its small and fluffy wings, hobbled around unsteadily and then ran off.

"Slow down. Be careful not to fall over." The anxious little eggshell called after the little yellow chick as it ran off.

The little yellow chick was not interested. It didn’t look back as it ran to a group of chicks close by.

"Looks like it doesn't need me anymore," said the little eggshell to itself. It felt a sense of loss and sadness as it didn’t want to part with the chick. It sighed as it saw the figure of the happy and free yellow chick amongst the group of chicks.

‘Howl, howl, howl.’ A gust of wind blew the little eggshell all over the place. The mischievous wind teased it. The wind could blow the little eggshell about with a single puff.

"Hey, please let me go, I never planned on travelling with you." The little eggshell protested in vain. The wind did not pay attention to it. It was minding its own business and happily playing. As a result, the little eggshell was swiftly rolled up by the gale of wind.

‘Roll, roll,’ the little eggshell rolled over and over down a street. Eventually, the wind got tired of playing. It left the little eggshell in front of a wall at the corner of a street and disappeared.

"Where am I? I feel lost." The little eggshell said. After a while, it came around to thinking that it was actually a good thing: "The little yellow chick didn’t need me anyway, so it’s best for me to find something else to do."

But what could the little eggshell do? It looked all around. Although lots of people passed by on the street, everyone was in a hurry, and no one stopped to look at the little eggshell lying in the corner.

"It looks like I won't find anything to do." The little eggshell sighed softly.

It was getting late, and it drifted off to sleep.

It faintly heard a voice saying, "Wow, this little eggshell will come in handy ‘on’ me."

The little eggshell opened its eyes and saw a dark little mouse standing in front of it. It didn't understand what was going on as the little mouse carried it on its back.

"From now on, I am an eggshell-mouse."The little mouse proudly announced.

"Silly mouse, I asked you to go and find something to eat. What are you dawdling for?" A shrill voice could be heard, along with a ‘thudding’ sound as a mucky and fat mouse bounced over to the little mouse.

"Mum, please call me ‘eggshell-mouse’from now on." The little mouse said to its mother, carrying the eggshell proudly on its back. "You see, if something terrible happens, I can ‘whoosh’ like this into the eggshell.” The little mouse suddenly curled up inside the little eggshell as it was speaking.

"Good gracious, what do you look like? Take that eggshell off your back right now. It looks hideous. Mice already have sharp teeth and claws. We don't need an eggshell to protect us." The big mouse yelled with discontent.

"Ok, ok." The little mouse pouted its mouth, reluctantly put down the little eggshell and ran off with the big mouse.

"Oh no! Even the mouse didn't need me. I feel useless." The little eggshell started to cry and hid in a corner. It cried until it fell sleep.

Each day after that, the little eggshell hid in a corner watching pedestrians walk by. Everyone was busy. No one stopped to look at it. It got used to a lonely and quiet life.

One day, a sparkly red glass ball rolled beside the little eggshell. It was just taking measure of the pretty object, when a chubby little hand scooped it up.

"What a cute little eggshell! I can use it to plant this busy lizzie seed in." A little girl said happily.

The little eggshell couldn’t believe what happened next. It was washed with water by the chubby little hands, then filled with soil, and finally the little girl planted a small black seed in the soil.

The little eggshell with the seed planted init was placed on a small shelf made of wire by the little girl on a sunny terrace.

The little eggshell hadn’t seen light for ages. Then suddenly, glittering sunlight pierced into its eyes, so it couldn’t open them. Facing the light, it squinted its eyes and felt a bit giddy. At the same time, the little eggshell heard someone talking to it.

"Hello. I’ve not seen a flower pot made of an eggshell before." A porcelain flower pot said.

"Me neither, look how cute it is." Another small flower pot said.

"What is your name? Let's be friends!" Several small flower pots said enthusiastically.

"Ok!" The little eggshell nodded and smiled.

The little eggshell could feel the warmth of the sun on its shell and could smell the warm ‘sunshine scent’ in the air.

"This has to be scent of happiness." The little eggshell said to itself.
