今天我们接着来看第22课的“每课一句”。

一、课文原文

Lesson 22 A glass envelope

My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post office. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster.

二、每课一句

Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle.

句中的we were travelling across the Channel与前面的last year似乎是矛盾的，因为last year是一般过去时的标志，按理travel应该采用过去式travelled。不少学生对此也都提出了疑问。

其实，这句话中的we were travelling across the Channel 可以理解为是Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle的时间地点背景设定，相当于是：

While we were travelling across the Channel, Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle.

即：

当我们正横渡英吉利海峡时，简把写有她姓名和地址的纸条塞进一个瓶子里。

所以，原句整句话其实可以改为：

Last year, while we were travelling across the Channel, Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle.

三、更多拓展

Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster.

这句话but前后两个并列分句都采用了比较级结构，即前一个分句中的cost a little more与后一分句中的certainly travel faster，它们前后形成了鲜明的对照，起到了很好的强调效果。
