In the last decade, incidences of diabetes in Asia's youth have skyrocketed. Out of the estimated 177 million people world wide with diabetes, 89 million are in Asia. The increase in young people with type 2 diabetes is a result of the change in lifestyles in Asia. Nowadays, computer games, mass transportation, and fast food are a part of everyday life. Unfortunately, traditional diets and daily exercise are rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Basically, there are two major types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is a disease that people are born with when their pancreas does not produce or produces only small amounts of insulin. Insulin helps you use the sugar in your food for energy. Type 2 diabetes is the one that most people fear. With type 2 diabetes the pancreas still makes insulin, but it is not enough or it is not effective. However, being diagnosed with diabetes doesn't mean the end of the world. Through proper medical care, diet, exercise, and a change in lifestyle, it is possible to control this disease.

过去十年来，亚洲年轻人罹患糖尿病的案例暴增。全球估计有一亿七千七百万名糖尿病患，亚洲就占了八千九百万名。亚洲年轻人罹患第二型糖尿病的数量之所以会增加要归咎于生活方式的改变。现在，计算机游戏、大众运输及快餐已成了日常生活的一部分。不幸的是，传统的饮食及日常运动正迅速消失中。

基本而言，糖尿病主要有第一型及第二型两种。第一型糖尿病属于天生，病患的胰脏不能生产胰岛素或只能生产少量的胰岛素。胰岛素可帮助我们将食物的糖分转化成能量。第二型糖尿病则是大多数人害怕的一种。我们若罹患第二型糖尿病，胰脏仍能生产胰岛素，但胰岛素不是不足就是无效。不过，被诊断出有糖尿病并不表示世界末日的到来。我们可以透过妥善的医疗、饮食、运动及生活方式的改变来控制病情。

语法重点：

1. 复习下列时间副词短语的用法：

over（in、during、for）the last（past）+ 一段时间

过去若干时间以来

上列时间副词短语在句中出现时，动词应采用现在完成时或现在完成进行时。请参看下例：

I have lived in this small town over the past ten years.

现在完成时

过去十年来我都一直住在这座小镇。

Mobile phones have been getting increasingly popular during the last  twenty-some years.

现在完成进行时

过去二十几年来，手机变得越来越普及。

The strange old man has been sitting in the corner of the coffee house for the last five hours.

现在完成进行时

这个怪老头过去五个小时都一直坐在咖啡厅的那个角落里。

2. 本课第一段第一句即采用了上列句型：

In the last decade, incidences of diabetes in Asia's youth have skyrocketed.

现在完成时

过去十年来，亚洲年轻人罹患糖尿病的案例暴增。

3. 介绍 ''out of + 数字'' 的意思及用法：

out of + 数字　　在若干……中

= among + 数字

In that area where air pollution is a serious problem, out of ten people, one suffers from lung cancer.

= In that area where air pollution is a serious problem, one out of ten people suffers from lung cancer.

在那个空气污染很严重的地方，每十人中就有一人罹患肺癌。

4. 本课第一段第二句即采用了上述结构：

Out of the estimated 177 million people  worldwide（the word over、around the world、across the world）with diabetes, 89 million are in Asia.

全球估计有一亿七千七百万名糖尿病患者，亚洲就占了八千九百万名。
