Greg Brockman

The OpenAI board of directors “shuffled”, and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and two independent directors, Tasha McCauley and Helen Toner, were out.

OpenAI‘s “palace change” was reversed, and the board of directors “reshuffled”. Did Sam Altman successfully “return to the palace”?!

On November 22, OpenAI announced on X that the company had reached an agreement in principle, and Sam Altman returned to OpenAI as CEO and returned with the newly formed board of directors.

We have reached a principle agreement that Sam Altman will return to OpenAI as CEO and form a new initial board with Bret Taylor (Chairman), Larry Summers, and Adam D‘Angelo.

We‘re working together to resolve the details. Thank you so much for your patience.

OpenAI‘s board of directors previously comprised six members, three OpenAI executives, and three non-employee directors, including: Chairman and President Greg Brockman, Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, and CEO Altman, as well as Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner.

Bret Taylor was the former co-CEO of Salesforce and is currently the chief technology officer of Facebook. He is responsible for long-term technology development direction management, and presided over the development of the News Feed (news), search, and Facebook platforms; Larry Summers is the former US Secretary of the Treasury.

After Altman and Brockman left, only Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever and three independent directors remained on the OpenAI board of directors.

Judging from the “new board list” announced by OpenAI this time, with the exception of Adam D‘Angelo, chief scientists Ilya Sutskever, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner, who originally dominated the “palace transformation,” are out of the game.

Sam Altman then retweeted the tweet, along with two emojis of love and a “salute.”

After that, he wrote again:

I love OpenAI and everything I‘ve done over the past few days has been to keep this team in line with its mission. When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday night, it was clear that this was the best path for me and my team. With the support of the new board and Satya, I’m looking forward to returning to openai and building a strong partnership with Microsoft.

Greg Brockman also later retweeted and said:

Remarkable progress has been made today. We will be stronger and more united than ever before.

Emmett, who was scheduled to become the new CEO of OpenAI, responded:

After 72 hours of intense work, I am very happy with this result. When I got into OpenAI, I wasn‘t sure what the right path was. It’s a way to maximize safety while all stakeholders are doing the right thing. I‘m excited to be a part of solving this problem.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella retweeted this tweet:

We are encouraged by the changes in the OpenAI board. We believe this is an essential first step on the path to more stable, more informed and more effective governance. Sam, Greg, and I talked and agreed they play a critical role in the OpenAI leadership team to ensure OpenAI continues to thrive and achieve its mission. We look forward to building on our strong partnerships to deliver the value of next-generation artificial intelligence to our customers and partners.
