Over 910 pieces of porcelain, with Chinese characters or unkown marks written in ink, were excavated from the Nanhai Ⅰ shipwreck between 2014 and 2016. Marks on these porcelain shards can be divided into eight categories

— family names, such as "陈(Chen)" and "戴(Dai)";

—Chinese character "直" , meaning "purchased";

— the use of the porcelain piece, such as "□前公用", indicating the user;

—Chinese character "纲", which remains puzzling;

—name of a place, such as "东山" , maybe the place of production;

—something like monograms;

—unknown symbols or languages

—others;
