後印象派畫家高更曾說：“瑪麗·卡薩特有魅力，但也有力量。”一百多年了，她仍然是美國乃至世界美術史上少有的幾位出色的女畫家之一。

瑪麗·卡薩特（Mary Cassatt，1844～1926）是19世紀末至20世紀初期，極少數能在法國藝術界活躍的美國藝術家之一。她是一位不受世俗觀念拘束、意志堅強、一心投入自己熱愛的藝術事業的女性。卡薩特出身於美國費城上等人家，二十歲時宣稱將來要做畫家，從而與父親發生衝突。在她的堅持下，父親最終首肯，讓她就讀賓州美術學院。她由此走上繪畫之路。
