小荷爾拜因成年後去了當時北方的文化中心巴塞爾，在那兒畫了許多作品，還結識了著名的人文主義者伊拉斯莫，併爲其作過一些肖像畫。

正當他在通向一流大師的道路上奮進的時候，宗教改革的動盪使他的希望成爲泡影。以後伊拉斯莫介紹他去了英國，在那兒他成爲了英王亨利八世的宮廷畫家，並在英國度過了他的大半生。小荷爾拜因以擅畫肖像著稱（因其父與他同名，故稱他小荷爾拜因）。
