今天我们接着来看第28课的“每课一句”。

一、课文原文

Lesson 28 No parking

Jasper White is one of those rare people who believe in ancient myths. He has just bought a new house in the city, but ever since he moved in, he has had trouble with cars and their owners. When he returns home at night, he always finds that someone has parked a car outside his gate. Because of this, he has not been able to get his own car into his garage even once. Jasper has put up 'No Parking' signs outside his gate, but these have not had any effect. Now he has put an ugly stone head over the gate. It is one of the ugliest faces I have ever seen. 二、每课一句

Jasper White is one of those rare people who believe in ancient myths.

有关这句话中的定语从句who believe in ancient myths中的believe到底采用单数还是复数的形式，存在较大争议。

有人认为，who所引导的定语从句是用来修饰先行词one的，所以believe应该用单数形式的believes。

但也有人认为，who所引导的定语从句是用来修饰先行词those rare people的，所以believe应该用复数形式的believe。

原文这句话采用了单数形式的believes，是因为作者想表达的是：

Jasper White is one of those rare people and he believes in ancient myths.

who所引导的定语从句是用来修饰先行词one的。

但是，这句话其实也可以理解为：

Of those rare people who believe in ancient myths, Jasper White is one.

从这个意义上讲，原句中的believes要改为believe。

三、更多拓展

It is one of the ugliest faces I have ever seen.

这句话中的I have ever seen其实也是定语从句，前面省略了关系代词that。

需要注意的是，如果先行词在从句中作主语的话，要注意从句中谓语动词的单复数。比如：

It is one of the ugliest faces that have ever been seen.

这句话想要表达的是：

Of the ugliest faces that have ever been seen, it is one.

但是，我们来看下面这句话：

It is the only one of the ugliest faces that has ever been seen.

这句话想要表达的是：

Of the ugliest faces, it is the only one that has ever been seen.
