威廉·透納感覺敏銳，富於幻想，充滿浪漫主義氣質。威廉·透納平生的抱負就是畫出足以同17世紀法國大師克勞德·洛蘭媲美的畫。爲了讓自己的作品驚世駭俗、不同凡響，透納在創作時，幾乎把一切富於戲劇性和震撼人心的效果都融進畫裏，常常使人們爲他敏妙的才華和不同凡響的筆意讚歎不已。

威廉·透納的油畫、水彩畫技巧純熟精湛，他用筆揮灑，有流動感，善於用光，他筆下的景色常常沐浴在明亮的光線之中。透納用光並不像倫勃朗，倫勃朗的光線是逐漸減弱最後融在陰影之中，而透納的光卻是逐步純化，最後變爲一片明亮的光輝。透納對畫面虛實的處理也別具一格，產生出動人的畫面效果。

威廉·透納去世前將三百幅油畫、近二萬幅水彩和素描贈送給了國家。透納的主要作品有《蒸汽和速度》、《議會大廈的火災》（1835年）、《戰艦歸航》（1819年）、《威尼斯風景》(1843年)、《暴風雪》（1842年）等。
