Secretary-General LI Baodong Meets with Heads of Relevant International Organizations

From September 10 to 12, LI Baodong, Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) met and exchanged views on fostering bilateral cooperation with Francis Gurry, Director-General of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO; and Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva, respectively.

LI said that the BFA is one of the most influential international organizations in the Asia-Pacific region. With a focus on Asia and a global perspective, the BFA actively promotes the parties involved to conduct extensive exchanges and build consensus, and jointly promote the well-being of people in Asia and around the world. Next, the BFA intends to enter new areas such as technological innovation, health, education, culture and media while keeping its focus on economic development and maintaining the tradition of the annual meeting. Currently, the BFA has established the Global Health Forum and will hold its first conference in China in 2019.

LI stressed that the BFA sets great store by the important role of the WIPO, the WHO and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and stands ready to enhance bilateral cooperation in the above five areas and jointly promote the related international cooperation. LI also invited the parties involved to attend the Global Health Forum.

The parties generally appreciate the important role of the BFA and the new development areas identified, and are willing to actively consider attending the Global Health Forum. Francis Gurry said that the WIPO has always attached great importance to scientific and technological innovation, intellectual property rights in the health field, education, etc., and is willing to foster cooperation with the BFA to benefit the human society. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Asia plays a vital role in international cooperation in health and has many best practices to share. The WHO is willing to strengthen pragmatic cooperation with the BFA in such areas as innovation and health. Peter Maurer said that humanitarianism involves a host of fields and calls for wide participation of all parties. The areas of innovation, health, education, culture, and media, etc. BFA intends to enter are closely related to humanitarianism. The ICRC is willing to actively explore various forms of cooperation with the BFA to help improve the well-being of Asian people.
