田黄石产于福州市寿山乡“寿山溪”两旁之水稻田底下、呈黄色而得名。寿山石优良品种。广义的田黄石指“田坑石”，狭义的田黄石指田坑石中发黄色者。田黄石是无法模仿的天然宝石，其价值主要从质、色、材三个方面来衡量。石质是重要标准，鉴赏家曾经总结为“六德”，即细、结、润、腻、温、凝，凡兼备的田黄石，堪称珍品。石色以黄金黄为贵，桔皮红为罕。白田不常见，黑田多粗劣。总之，石色纯洁者为佳，浑浊者逊之。田黄石难得，而材巨、质嫩、色佳、刻工精妙者更为罕见。物理性质、工艺美术特征方面，田黄石与寿山石相近，已成为独立的印章石品种。

此藏品为八仙过海田黄石印章。是田黄品种中的珍品,素有“万石中之王”尊号。其色泽温润可爱，肌理细密，自明清以来就被印人视为“印石之王”。数百年来田黄石极受藏家至爱，正如俗语所说：“黄金易得，田黄难求”。“八仙”降魔除悪、匡扶正义……，自汉代起流传。随着“道教” 的历史发展；“八仙” 成为民间社会从上至下备受尊仰的对象。宋明时期尊尚释道信仰，皇帝、王公显贵、文人仕大夫、百姓草民无不熟悉和喜爱。鉴于此；各种有关“八仙” 的故事传说、绘画、雕塑等文化艺术作品广为流传至今，而“八仙过海” 的故事犹为人们津津乐道。此套八仙过海田黄石印章取材优质田黄，章体内外萝卜纹、红筋等田黄石质要素特征明确，共八枚，共重2056.6克，由于当年的手工艺原因：八件单重略有差别(最大最小相差近10克) ，这也恰好证明是为当时真品的因素之一，是传世遗珍，其收藏价值难以言喻。
