Georg Baselitz（乔治·巴塞利兹），1938年出生在德国的萨克森。作为德国“新表现主义”的代表性艺术家之一，他发展出一种颇具表现性的人物画风格，重现传说中的英雄人物和神话故事中的人物。巴塞利兹对绘画的纯粹图像因素感兴趣，有意忽视叙事性和象征性。

从上世纪60年代中期开始，巴塞利兹尝试用一种“形象倒置”的方法创作绘画。在这样的画作中，上下倒置的人物似乎在向上升，重力颠倒，强烈的色彩和宽大而粗犷的笔触渲染出独特的画面形象。

1958年，20岁时他穿越柏林墙从东德到了西德。1964年，他开始画笨拙粗鲁的农民、牧人和猎人。1965年，他发展出一种颇具表现性的人物画风格，将传说中的英雄人物和神话故事中的人物在被焚毁的德国土地和风景上重现出来。后来，巴塞利玆对绘画的纯粹图像因素感兴趣，而有意忽视叙事性和象征性。

从1969年开始，他开始改变主题，画处于混乱世界中的人形。他经常画上下倒置的人体，在这样的画中，人物似乎在向上升，重力似乎颠倒了。而且巴塞利玆的作品很大，高达两米的水彩画在他的作品中十分常见。这一风格也成为他的典型风格。巴塞利兹说：“我想绘画对象不再具有固有的重要性，所以我选择没有意义的东西……绘画客体不表达任何东西，绘画不是达到一个目的的手段，相反，绘画是自发的”巴塞利兹不同于其他新表现主义画家在于他坚持强调作品的形式特征——即绘画作品的个性。

倒立的人，是巴塞利兹绘画中的典型场景。这位新表现主义绘画大师早已成名，他和已故的波依斯形成了德国当代艺术的两个重要方向，一个仍保持着对传统艺术手法的信念，另一个则走出画布。巴塞利玆认为“我生命中最重要的事，乃是继续画下去。” 上世纪八十年代之后，巴赛利玆渐渐为世界熟知。

虽然巴塞利兹的每一幅画在表面上都是颠倒的结构，但其内在却有着稳定、强烈的感受，既抽象又具象的绘画张力，没有因为颠倒翻转而减损，却在混乱对称中形成刺激、独特的交会。
