Georg Baselitz（喬治·巴塞利茲），1938年出生在德國的薩克森。作爲德國“新表現主義”的代表性藝術家之一，他發展出一種頗具表現性的人物畫風格，重現傳說中的英雄人物和神話故事中的人物。巴塞利茲對繪畫的純粹圖像因素感興趣，有意忽視敘事性和象徵性。

從上世紀60年代中期開始，巴塞利茲嘗試用一種“形象倒置”的方法創作繪畫。在這樣的畫作中，上下倒置的人物似乎在向上升，重力顛倒，強烈的色彩和寬大而粗獷的筆觸渲染出獨特的畫面形象。

1958年，20歲時他穿越柏林牆從東德到了西德。1964年，他開始畫笨拙粗魯的農民、牧人和獵人。1965年，他發展出一種頗具表現性的人物畫風格，將傳說中的英雄人物和神話故事中的人物在被焚燬的德國土地和風景上重現出來。後來，巴塞利玆對繪畫的純粹圖像因素感興趣，而有意忽視敘事性和象徵性。

從1969年開始，他開始改變主題，畫處於混亂世界中的人形。他經常畫上下倒置的人體，在這樣的畫中，人物似乎在向上升，重力似乎顛倒了。而且巴塞利玆的作品很大，高達兩米的水彩畫在他的作品中十分常見。這一風格也成爲他的典型風格。巴塞利茲說：“我想繪畫對象不再具有固有的重要性，所以我選擇沒有意義的東西……繪畫客體不表達任何東西，繪畫不是達到一個目的的手段，相反，繪畫是自發的”巴塞利茲不同於其他新表現主義畫家在於他堅持強調作品的形式特徵——即繪畫作品的個性。

倒立的人，是巴塞利茲繪畫中的典型場景。這位新表現主義繪畫大師早已成名，他和已故的波依斯形成了德國當代藝術的兩個重要方向，一個仍保持着對傳統藝術手法的信念，另一個則走出畫布。巴塞利玆認爲“我生命中最重要的事，乃是繼續畫下去。” 上世紀八十年代之後，巴賽利玆漸漸爲世界熟知。

雖然巴塞利茲的每一幅畫在表面上都是顛倒的結構，但其內在卻有着穩定、強烈的感受，既抽象又具象的繪畫張力，沒有因爲顛倒翻轉而減損，卻在混亂對稱中形成刺激、獨特的交會。
