On the Founding of The Scholar Journal

Lecturer: Wang Hui

The establishment of The Scholar in the early 1990s has embodied an academic and intellectual transformation of some enlightened intellectuals. Discontent with the empty social cries in the New Enlightenment movement since the 1980s, they reflected upon the metaphysical slogans that were lacking in academic profundity, and as a result, they turned to more realistic scholarly studies to transform from public intellectuals to expert scholars in specific fields. In the talk, Professor Wang Hui will track back to the time when Scholar was founded, highlighting the challenge of China's intellcutual world from today's perspective.
