《博物要覽》記載，金絲者出川澗中，木紋有金絲；楠木之至美者，向陽處或結成人物山水之紋。金絲楠木質堅硬耐腐，自古有“水不能浸，蟻不能穴”之說，因此被稱爲“木中皇帝”。金絲楠木隸屬中國名貴木材，主要產於我國四川、雲南、貴州及長江以南省區。據記載，在所有的金絲楠木中，四川的金絲楠木材質最佳。金絲楠木是寶貴的不可再生資源，屬國家二級保護植物，相傳在明末就已經瀕臨滅絕，歷經千百年流傳至今，已經極其稀少。
